History of Denver

Denver first saw European settlement by the Americans in 1858, when gold prospectors from out of Kansas arrived in the area. The Pikes Peak Gold Rush enticed many prospectors into the area, luring them with promises of easy gold. The difficulty of the terrain had previously kept settlement from taking hold, with many prospectors and land speculators moving westward instead. California and Wyoming saw settlement before Denver did, but this slowly began to change, beginning with the founding of Denver City in November of 1858.

The original Denver City site struggled as the fortunes of the gold prospectors wavered. Denver City continued to struggle for many years, serving mostly as a place for recreation for miners and prospectors. Permanent settlement seemed unlikely, with a mostly transient population. Anyone that lived permanently in Denver City worked in the service industry, running saloons and trading posts. The Colorado area became an official Territory on February 28th, 1861. Denver City was actually incorporated later on November 7th, 1861. Denver City officially became just Denver after it was named the capital of the new Territory in 1865.

Denver became the capital of the newly admitted state of Colorado on August 1st, 1876. As did much of the western United States, a period of tremendous growth was experienced when the Southern Pacific Railroad came through the area in the 1880s. Along with unprecedented growth came great corruption in the late 1800s. Criminals and city officials ran the city together until well into the twentieth century.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Denver was the second largest city in the western United States. The booming populations of San Francisco and Los Angeles would soon usurp Denver of this title, however.

Many of America’s most famous authors and cultural figures also got their start in Denver. Allen Ginsberg spent many years in Denver when the Beat movement was becoming popular. Neal Cassady grew up on Larimer Street in Denver, and Jack Kerouac visited the city, with his time spent there making it into his seminal work, On the Road.

Denver has remained a cultural magnet throughout the years, with many intellectuals and writers calling the city home since well after the Beat movement. Colorado and Denver in particular are home to many annual festivals and events that draw crowds from all over the country.

Going into the 1980s, Denver became more involved with high tech manufacturing, producing a wide variety of telecom, aerospace, and transportation products. This diversification helped significantly to revive the economy of Denver after the troubles of the 1970s.

Denver is centrally located in the United States, giving it a powerful trading advantage. Thousands of tons of goods are shipped by air, rail, and truck every year through the Denver area. As a result of its national and worldwide trading importance, Denver has also become a major hub of banking activity.
